In this week’s Thursday Thoughts I wrote about my recent trip to Canggu in Bali, a place that looks like it’s been fabricated from Instagram posts, thus demonstrating the influence of algorithms on the real world. The post below demonstrates the influence on algorithms on people, specifically Gen Z girls, the first generation to be completely raised on algorithmic content. As the father of an 8 year old girl myself I found it illuminating and terrifying in equal measure but the author,
, is now a must-follow on my fatherhood journey (check out her other essays hyperlinked in the post).Watch this…

So, what can we do to combat the impact of algorithms on our little ones? This article from the brilliant Yokogao Mag might help. Entitled ‘A Glimpse into the Daily Lives of Japanese Kids’, it demonstrates through intimate and evocative photographs another way to live.
In the heart of Japan, where time always seems to slow down to a gentle, nostalgic rhythm, there exists a world suspended in the memories of a century-old home. Through the lens of her camera, Hara Kazuaki has masterfully captured this enchanting realm, revealing the intricate tapestry of Japanese childhood like no other.

Since my trip to Japan last December I have becoming somewhat obsessed with the culture, which seems to maintain an effortless balance between analog and digital living. Mentally, I like to spend a lot of time there and I travel through ‘Portals’ to do so.
‘Portals’ is a series from my favourite ambient label
, which consists of field recordings from all over Tokyo. With eyes closed in a cool and darkened room, it’s almost like being there. Find out more about the exact recording locations and journey here. There’s also a mix featuring ambient music from Japanese musicians and Japan-inspired productions, below.

Of course the best way to escape the algorithm is to go offline and get inspiration elsewhere so, this weekend, head to a book shop or a record shop or flea market with an open mind as to what you might find. The Retro Factory puts on vintage and flea markets all over Singapore with a permanent pop-up in the atrium of Katong Square open from 12pm - 8pm every day - a great spot for vinyl digging! See what else they’ve got coming up at https://www.facebook.com/retrofactorysg/.
See you down by the crates! Nx
