Thanks for sharing this Plucky (may I call you Plucky?), this was an interesting story that deserves to be read however I shall not punish every artist on Bandcamp for the sins of the platform because it's still the best way to purchase their work and pay them directly online. Thanks for contributing. Best, N
I had no idea what to expect from the title but I didn't expect to find out that both Kate and Lily were on OF because it pays better than music.
By the time I'd got to that point I was already thinking that OF isn't, or at least wasn't originally reserved for people selling skin, why not push their music through a similar service. Patreon perhaps. Surely the world is ready for a self publishing style way to consume music that gives the power back to artists?
I agree, I think musicians may need to loose themselves from labels the way writers have from publications and monetise direct with fans - OF for music basically - but they need to brave enough to pull their songs from Spotify first as no one's gonna pay for what they can get for free.
Spotify and the like could have been the solution, instead they're the new problem. A not for profit artists union style solution would make sense. But there's little impetus for implementing change unless you're affected by the system if there's no profit involved.
There’s a lot that resonates here, Neal! I don’t believe anyone has all the answers, or maybe some, but the current state of affairs is a revolting mess pretty much across the board, with “overlords” for whom I have zero respect, given the lack of value they put on human creative expression. Singapore seems affordable, here in LA you’re only getting a small one from Monday to Wednesday for that, or maybe just two days if you’re a generous tipper. Keep it coming, as I personally work up the nerve to write my first Substack piece beyond Notes …
I for one won't be spending any money at Bandcamp. This post from Louise Distras is the reason why.

hi Neal, thanks for your reply and please always call me Plucky, I don't mind.
What a well written revelation of an article.

What she posts isn’t pornographic but a commentary. A stunt.
It's not porno but neither is it art therefore it remains objectification.
